During his participation at the World Energy Leaders’ Summit, Dr. Alshammari, a Saudi postdoctoral fellow at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology, has won the runner up prize at completion of the Future Energy Leaders’ summit held in the Colombian city of Cartagena within the activities of the World Energy Leaders’ Summit hosted by the Colombian President Juan Santos.

Dr. Alshammari stated that the idea of ​​his winning project presented at the summit was to the strengthening of consumer use of alternative fuels for transportation through the use of communication techniques of modern social project aims to enable consumers to design and formulate a fuel suitable for the transportation sector in the future without the need for forward theories and scientific fundamentals and the development of many types of clean fuel commensurate with all income groups in the society. Dr. Alshammari hopes that such an approach would greatly contribute to reducing the environmental impact of carbon emissions and reduce dependence on petroleum products in the transport sector in developing countries in the next generation of the energy industry. Dr. Alshammari has received the award from the jury of the Colombian National Committee of the World Energy Council, during his participation at the World Energy Leaders’ Summit, as representative of the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST).

Dr. Alshammari had just returned from Colombia after he was invited to participate at the World Energy Leaders’ Summit by the Colombian Minister of Energy and Mines of Colombia as a Future Energy Leader of Saudi Arabia. The summit included and delegations from 66 countries, including 25 ministers in the field of energy and oil, who discussed energy issues, particularly in Latin America and the studies conducted by the World Energy Council in the field of energy challenge three-dimensional, and that the participation of Dr. Alshammari, which focused this year on the role of institutions in securing financial investments necessary for the energy sector and the balance between energy security, affordability, while avoiding the environmental impact. The summit also discussed the importance of regional integration in energy networks that plays an essential part in Latin America. The summit also included regional meetings of the National Committees of the World Energy Council, which held a high-level gathering of ministers, senior executives, experts and leaders of the energy sector, in order to achieve progress in the dialogue between the public and private sectors towards sustainable energy policies over the long term while striving to promote sustainable energy systems.

The Colombian President, in his speech to the summit, highlighted the importance of energy to support the Colombian economic growth, combat poverty, create jobs, and reduce unemployment. He added that his country is seeking to strengthen its position in the sustainability of its energy policy, noting the importance of energy in transforming Colombia from a rural country into one of most emerging economies in Latin America.

It also included this meeting to hold the first Future Energy Leaders’ Summit which discussed global energy agenda which they had assessed recently as published by the WEC FEL world energy monitor which assesses such issues based upon their impact and uncertainty, in addition to other issues such as strengthening the youth national engagement, closing gender gap in the energy industry, and the role of gas as an alternative transport fuel for transport.

It is worth mentioning that Dr. Alshammari is pursuing a postdoctoral fellowship King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) after earning his PhD from Imperial College in London in chemical engineering “Clean Energy via Hydrothermal Gasification of Hydrocarbon Resources”, in addition to his work as a research intern at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Austrian capital, Vienna. He has been selected by the World Energy Council to join the global network of Future Energy Leaders as a representative of the youth energy generation in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia at the World Energy Congress 2013, which was held in South Korea, in addition to selecting his PhD work to be presented the expert forum of that congress. His current research at KAUST focuses on the fuel design, combustion, and applied systems analysis of modern energy technologies aiming to bridge the gap between scientific research and policies as to enable to designing more sustainable science-oriented policies for the energy and climate change sector.

At the conclusion of his statement, Dr. Alshammari raised his sincere thanks to the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz, Crown Prince, and Deputy Crown Prince, for the support and encouragement that they facilitate to support the scientist of Saudi Arabia in all fields, and he looked forward to continue to work and contribute to provide more scientific achievements of Saudi Arabia to support the development and sustainability of the global energy industry.
